"The ritual introduction plays with oriental mysticism on this debut and takes us into the musical realm of ANDAKT. Solo artist Savarak (also active with Raumer) has all the artistic reins in his hand and he relies on partly pounding, partly speedy black metal. His vocal cords are severely strained, we encounter dark growls, nasty screaming and exalted clear singing. The sterile drum sound takes some getting used to, but the good man makes up for this shortcoming in terms of composition. The doomy side with dark vocals of “Nomadic Slavery” alternating with controlled outbursts and background melodies demands respect - an emotional hit that not only touches the heart (or the kidneys) with happiness hormones, but also with a biting harshness. Chaotic hard-hitting numbers like “Awaken The Beast” stir things up with a more direct approach; the rhythmic stops thrown in unobtrusively are pleasing here. Melodic leads and driving bars alternate wonderfully during the title track “Rituals Of Angzhar”, and the short quiet passage and epic solo interlude as well as heavy grooves and the looping chorus also earn positive points. Furthermore, the use of two text languages (E, NOR) creates a natural phonetic contrast. The banging finale “Vekkelsesvind” shakes us again with gripping rhythm and sends us into eternal darkness after half an hour...
Conclusion: Beneath the rough surface there are a lot of melodic and rhythmic details that enhance Rituals Of Angzhar into a highly interesting, sometimes extravagantly strange journey of discovery. Points of friction: the sterile sound, the vocals and the short playing time - but quality over quantity!"
